Transport in Bhutan
In addition to the international airport at Paro, there are two domestic airports currently in Jakar in Bumthang, the other in Yonpula in Trashigang. Druk Air and Bhutan Airlines are the only flight which will lead your way to Bhutan. Surprisingly Bhutan doesn’t allow any other’s country flight to come inside till now. Druk Air has its connectivity with Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, Bagdogra (Siliguri), Bodhgaya and Guwahati in India, Kathmandu (Nepal), Dhaka (Bangladesh), Bangkok (Thailand) and Singapore. So you have to choose your connecting destinations among these.
Due to the mountainous terrain, there are no railways in Bhutan. This means that overland travel by road is a necessity. There is one major highway, which runs east-west through the center of Bhutan. Distances from one place to other place are relatively small, road conditions and terrain can make road travel quite time consuming. With the exception of Gasa district, all major towns are accessible by road. The density of traffic is normally very low.
Despite high mountains, steep slopes and the deepest of valleys Bhutan has a relatively well developed network of roads. That said, rarely will one find a length of either straight or flat road. In some stretches one can encounter 6 to 7 bends per kilometer! Average speeds for road travel rarely exceed 30 km/hour, with tourist buses making even slower progress. One is however handsomely rewarded for the long and sometimes tiring car journey, by the spectacular views of towering mountains, lush green jungle, ancient villages and majestic monasteries.
